In the fall of 2008, CFRI officially opened the new translational research building. This state-of-the-art research complex brings together teams of experts to collaborate on a common concern: how to solve the health issues of children and families.
Inside the new facility, scientists in traditional wet labs examine genes, molecules, and cells to discover the mechanisms of disease. In neighbouring dry labs, researchers armed with computers and data sets analyze patterns of health and disease in different communities with a view to identifying population needs, trends, and risk factors. In the clinical trials unit, clinical investigators wll lead studies to find better treatments for patients.
The physical space is organized so people will naturally interact and share ideas. People working on related issues such as childhood obesity and diabetes are housed on the same floor, which lends itself to collaboration and teamwork.
This new building was generously funded by BC Children’s Hospital Foundation (including Fishing for Kids Fundraising Tournament and Mining for Miracles), Canada Foundation for Innovation, BC Knowledge Development Fund, Child & Family Research Institute, University of British Columbia, Canadian Diabetes Association, and other supporters for construction costs, laboratory fit out and equipment, and matching funds. The commitment of the Provincial Health Services Authority was instrumental in securing long-term funding for the project.
