Innovations in Acute Care
& Technology
Background
The Innovations in Acute Care & Technology (iACT) research cluster at BC Children’s Hospital and the Child & Family Research Institute (CFRI) brings together basic, clinical, and population health researchers in anesthesia, cardiology, critical care, emergency, and surgical specialties who share a common aim: to enhance the quality of care for children. Through wide-ranging research activities, they evaluate service delivery, address improved pain management, investigate molecular and cellular physiology in health and disease, study global health, and develop new technologies.
iACT has described the integration and scope of member activities as an interlocking and complementary set of domains or pods. Research fostered by the cluster includes both collaborative and independent projects with a focus in one or more of the domains or pods.
iACT was granted CFRI cluster status in April 2009. Nomination and election of a founding executive team was followed by a cluster membership drive in May, and a competition for research concept funding in June. During this time, members of iACT have maintained a close working relationship with the BCCH Office of Pediatric Surgical Evaluation and Innovation (OPSEI) based on a shared commitment to ensuring that clinical practice questions drive research (knowledge creation) which in turn drives practice change. At the present time the cluster has approximately 50 clinicians and investigators who have designated iACT as their affiliated cluster within CFRI.
Our Mission
The members of the iACT Research Cluster collaborate with partners and across disciplines on clinically-driven research to improve health care and health outcomes for children and families.
Our Values
In pursuing our cluster’s mission, the members of iACT are guided by our shared values:
• Accountable, fair and ethical conduct
• Collegiality and partnership
• Creativity and innovation
• Effectiveness, safety and quality
• Patient-centered research
Our Vision
By 2015, the iACT Research Cluster will be a collaborative consortium that is recognized for effectively facilitating and promoting innovation in patient care through collaborative multi-disciplinary clinical research, education and training.
