Foundation laid for Child & Family Research Imaging Facility

Above ground construction is expected to begin this week on the new Child & Family Research Imaging Facility. Construction crews have completed the foundation and are currently levelling the site.

The new facility will house one of only a few research-dedicated MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanners in Canada. With a 3-Tesla MRI and an imaging analysis and neuro-informatics lab, this new facility is designed to enable a wide-range of research studies on the Oak Street campus. It will be located near the existing MRI clinical scanner and the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units at BC Children’s Hospital. The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2012.

The Child & Family Research Imaging Facility is funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund. BC’s mining community, through Mining for Miracles, has also committed $1.3 million to support construction of the facility.

Dr. Steven Miller is the principal investigator for grants that fund the Child & Family Research Imaging Facility and Dr. Ken Poskitt is the facility’s director. Investigators interested in developing imaging research projects with the new facility should contact Dr. Miller or Dr. Poskitt.

The construction staging area obstructs a portion of the parking and driveway in front of the BC Women’s Admitting entrance (#97); however, steps have been taken to ensure staff and patient access, including redirection to alternate exits as necessary. The BC Women’s Admitting entrance (#97) will be open throughout the construction.
