Construction begins on new Child & Family Imaging Facility

Workers at BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s & Health Centre broke ground on the construction of the Child & Family Research Imaging Facility last week. The new facility will house a 3-Tesla MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanner and an imaging analysis and neuro-informatics lab.

Demolition, the first and noisiest stage of the project, is now complete. The next phase of the project, excavation, has started.

Expected to be completed by April 2012, the new facility will be one of only a few research-dedicated pediatric MRIs in Canada and will be designed to address the requirements of any research study on the Oak Street campus.

The new MRI will be located near the existing MRI clinical scanner and the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units at BC Children’s Hospital. It is funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund. BC’s mining community, through Mining for Miracles, has also committed $5 million to support construction of the facility.

Dr. Steven Miller is the principal investigator for grants funding the Child & Family Research Imaging Facility. He is a senior clinician scientist at CFRI, a neurologist at BC Children’s, and associate professor with UBC's Department of Pediatrics.

Dr. Ken Poskitt is the Director of the new facility. Dr. Poskitt is an associate clinician scientist at CFRI, a pediatric neuroradiologist at BC Children’s and associate professor in with UBC's Department of Radiology and Department of Pediatrics.

The construction staging area will obstruct a portion of the parking and driveway in front of the BC Women’s Admitting entrance (#95), however steps have been taken to ensure staff and patient access, including redirection to alternate exits as necessary. The BC Women’s Admitting entrance (#95) will remain open and in use throughout the construction.
