Diabetes Study Begins Recruitment
Dr. Rusung Tan and Dr. Constadina Panagiotopoulos of the institute's Diabetes Research Program are beginning their study "Detecting beta cell specific T cells in type 1 diabetes." They are recruiting patients with new onset type 1 diabetes and, if possible, their first degree relatives. Principal investigator Dr. Tan and co-investigator Dr. Panagiotopoulos were recently awarded a National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant of $557,000 US over two years to conduct the study.
Recruits' blood will be tested with novel peptides made by Drs. Tan and Panagiotopoulos. The investigators hope to see if they can detect the cells that attack pancreatic islet cells. Patients from BC Children's Hospital are being recruited, and patients from BC or elsewhere who have been diagnosed within the previous six months are also invited to participate. Drs. Tan and Panagiotopoulos are also receiving patient samples from their collaborators at the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes in Denver. |
