Construction Begins on Child & Family Research Institute
ExpansionVisible work on the expansion of the Child & Family Research Institute (CFRI) will begin on or about January 16, 2006 . The Civil contract has been awarded, which means work to shift the location of the Ring Road closer to BC Children's Hospital can begin. The Ring Road is being moved to make room for the 121,034 square foot expansion.
Activity, which will include construction equipment and vehicles, will be concentrated in the area between the back of Ambulatory Care building, Level 1 North and the front of the existing CFRI buildings. For your safety, please use alternate routes whenever possible and exercise caution if you must drive or walk in this area while construction is underway.
Site set-up will result in the loss of some parking spaces adjacent to CFRI and the noise associated with construction is inevitable; your patience is greatly appreciated.
The Civil contract includes:

The construction of a new Ring Road. The existing road will remain operational until the new road is ready to open, ensuring 24/7 access to BC Children's Hospital Emergency Department and other destinations on the campus.

Most of the trees in the area will be retained; however, some London Plane trees need to be removed. They will be replaced with equivalent trees once construction is finished.

The relocation of telecommunication services buried under the Ring Road at the back of Ambulatory Care.

The relocation and upgrading of site infrastructure including electrical and water lines, curbs and light fixtures.

The children's playground on the lawn outside Level 1 North will be moved. A new location has yet to be determined. The installation of temporary parking stalls at the back of Ambulatory Care.

CFRI currently comprises 163,000 square feet of laboratory and support facilities space. Completion of the construction will almost double our research space, making CFRI the largest research institute of its kind in Western Canada. |
