CAIRE Publishes First-of-Kind Guidelines
CFRI investigators Drs. David Scheifele and Simon Dobson are among the authors of “Canadian Association for Immunization Research and Evaluation (CAIRE) Guidelines for Industry Sponsored Clinical Trial and Epidemiology Contract Research” recently published in the journal Human Vaccines (2005;1(4):140-2). The guidelines address participation in industry-sponsored clinical trial and epidemiology contract research within Canada, and are the first of their kind to be published anywhere.
The Canadian Association for Immunization Research and Evaluation (CAIRE), which is coordinated through the Vaccine Evaluation Centre on the site of BC Children’s Hospital, worked in collaboration with six major vaccine manufacturers to develop the guidelines. The guidelines were developed in response to a challenge to the research community from the Committee of International Journal Editors to devise means to reduce conflicts of interest relating to sponsored research. Topics addressed include definition of investigators, data ownership, protocol development, data management, data analysis, producing a study report and publication of the results of the study.
CAIRE is a unique vaccine research interest group with over 100 members across Canada. Members include specialists in childhood and infectious disease, public health, clinical trials, vaccine immunology and technical assessment, epidemiology, social and behavioural scientists, nurse researchers, mathematical modelers and biostatisticians. The CAIRE Steering Committee is chaired by Dr. Scheifele, who is Director of the Vaccine Evaluation Centre and CIHR/Wyeth Chair in Clinical Vaccine Research. |
