Institute Investigators Receive CIHR Operating Grants
Results of the September 2005 Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Operating Grants competition are in. Congratulations to the CFRI investigators who were successful in the competition. The three- and five-year awards are worth approximately $3.35 million:

Project: Optimizing antioxidant defenses of preterm infants
Dr. William Gibson
Project: Regulation of body weight: hypothalamic mediators and their peripheral targets
Dr. Michael Klein
Project: Determining the attitudes of women and maternity care providers toward birth: conflict, confusions and concordance
Dr. Michael Kobor
Project: Mechanisms of histone variant H2A.Z chromatin deposition and function
Dr. Steven Miller
Abnormal brain development in premature newborns: Risk factors and neurodevelopment outcome
Dr. Catherine Pallen
Neurobiology of protein tyrosine phosphatase alpha (PTPa)
CFRI investigators’ applications were also ranked highly by their reviewing committees. For instance, the application by Dr. Steven Miller, a recent CFRI recruit who was featured in the January issue of RR Online, was ranked first in its category. Both Dr. Philippe Chessex and Dr. Michael Kobor ranked second in their categories. Almost all of the successful applicants worked on their applications with the CFRI Research & Technology Development Office. Those applications developed with the Research & Technology Development Office had a 47% success rate, compared to the national average success rate of 24.8%.
The Research & Technology Development Office collaborates with investigators to build research ideas and experimental designs; conducts peer and critical review of research proposals and grants; coordinates major infrastructure and multi-institutional proposals; facilitates strategic research planning for individuals and groups; and performs substantive editing and revision of proposals.
