Pre-school program shown to improve key cognitive functions, self-control
An innovative curriculum for preschoolers may improve academic performance, reduce diagnoses of attention deficient hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and close the achievement gap between children from poor families and those from wealthier homes, according to research led by a Vancouver neuroscientist who is an expert on the development of the cognitive functions that depend on the prefrontal cortex area of the brain, called executive functions (EFs).

Scientists identify a combination of four key biomarkers
for diagnosing Graft Versus Host Disease
A research team led by the Child & Family Research Institute, BC Children’s Hospital, and the University of British Columbia has identified a combination of four key biomarkers – blood proteins – in children with chronic Graft Versus Host Disease (GVHD), a painful, disabling, and frequently fatal complication of bone marrow transplantation.

Standardizing physician practice reduces risk
of severe complications of pre-eclampsia in pregnant women
Researchers at the Child & Family Research Institute (CFRI) and BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre have found that standardizing the way doctors assess and care for pregnant women admitted to hospital reduces the incidence of severe complications of pre-eclampsia from 5.1 per cent to 0.7 per cent.

Cholesterol levels in the pancreatic beta cells discovered to play a key role in insulin secretion and development of diabetes
