BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit
This program of injury research and surveillance has contributed to the understanding and prevention of unintentional and intentional injury in British Columbia and beyond. The unit has become a leader through its many partnerships and collaborations among provincial, national and international groups. The mission of the injury unit is to reduce the societal and economic burden of injury among all age groups in BC.

Research projects and interests include:

  • Unintentional and intentional injury surveillance and prevention
  • Evidence-based practice for reducing falls
  • Sport and recreational injuries – specialization in concussions and head injuries

Unintentional and intentional injury surveillance and prevention program
Ian Pike
  • Social and cultural determinants of injury among new Canadians in British Columbia
  • Surveillance: BC Children's Hospital Injury Reporting and Prevention Program (CHIRPP)
  • Education and knowledge transfer: Strategic planning for youth suicide and abuse prevention
  • Public information: Providing accessible resources to public, media, and stakeholders
Evidence-based practice for reducing falls
Vicky Scott
  • Projects at national and regional levels in collaboration with heath authorities to support evidence-based research for reducing falls and injuries for all age groups
  • Site selection for research projects through vital links to residential facilities and home and community service for seniors
Sport and recreational injuries – specialization in concussions and head injuries
Shelina Babul
  • Efficacy of helmet bylaws vs. education in the Lower Mainland
  • Neurotrauma injuries in soccer: Are headguards the solution?
  • CSA standards for helmets in skiing/snowboarding
  • Sport surveillance analysis
