Infectious & Inflammatory Diseases

The goal of the Infectious & Inflammatory Diseases Program is to enhance quality of care for children with infectious and immunological diseases.

The program brings together the highly complementary disciplines of study of infectious diseases and immunology. The program's principal investigators work to enhance knowledge about the occurrence, causes, therapies and prevention of infectious diseases, and to discover and explain the cellular and molecular interactions underlying the normal and abnormal responses of the immune system.

Areas of Focus
  • Microbial pathogenesis
  • Host defense against infection
  • Immunopathology/transplantation
  • Clinical studies and epidemiology
  • New drug development
Program investigators work together in a seamless continuum from basic science research to clinical care, and maintain active collaborations with complementary organizations locally, provincially, nationally and internationally.

Components of the Program
  • The Vaccine Evaluation Centre, which is unique in Canada, and focuses on vaccine safety and effectiveness in children and adults
  • The study of infections in patients with cystic fibrosis
  • Research of rubella, coxsackie and other viruses
  • A world-class program for study of tuberculosis and related bacterial diseases in one of the only animal research containment laboratories in Canada
  • A model program to foster judicious use of antibiotics in children to slow spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria
  • Research into skin immunity, X-linked lymphoproliferative disorder, and graft-versus-host disease
  • A program to study the mechanisms of innate host defence against childhood infection

The program also serves as data hub for the IMPACT Surveillance Network, a unique infection monitoring system linking 12 pediatric centres across Canada, and is a major participant in a Canada-wide network studying autoimmune pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes.
