Summary
My research program is about family and child health in the context of supportive and palliative care.  I am particularly interested in the psychosocial aspect of supportive and palliative care, from diagnosis through bereavement, especially with families in which a child is dying.  These families often face numerous challenges that require assistance, yet there is little research evidence on which health professionals can base their care.  If we can understand families' experiences, their needs, and the kind of interventions that are helpful, then we can move towards providing optimal, evidence-based care that will enrich the lives of these families.

Current Projects

Charting the Territory: Determining and Documenting Trajectories for Families Where a Child Has a Life-Threatening Condition
I am co-principal investigator with Hal Siden on this recent CIHR-funded grant (2008-2113). Our co-investigators are R. Brant, S. Cadell, B. Davies, and L. Straatman. In this multi-site quantitative study, we will explore the illness trajectory of children with life-threatening conditions as well as document the bio-psychosocial-spiritual trajectories of parents and siblings of these children.

New Emerging Team in Transitions in Pediatric Palliative and End of Life Care
This project is funded by CIHR from 2004-2009. Hal Siden is the Principal Investigator and I am a co-investigator.

Caregiving Parents of Children with Life-Limiting Illnesses: Beyond Stress and Coping to Growth
Dr. Susan Cadell is the Principal Investigator on this CIHR grant. I am a co-investigator along with H. Siden, B. Davies, L. Staatman, S. Liben, and D. Hemsworth.
