1. How will the new Research Ethics Board help me?
Prior to the launch of the new REB, applications, revisions or amendments from researchers on the Oak Street campus faced a two-step approval process through RISe, UBC’s application management software. Applications were first reviewed by the Children’s & Women’s Research Review Committee and then by UBC’s Clinical Research Ethics Board (CREB) or Behavioural Research Ethics Board (BREB).

With the new ethics board, researchers continue to use RISe but their application face only one review committee, the new on-site UBC C&W REB. This streamlined process can reduce the amount of time researchers have to wait for approval by up to four weeks.

2. What is the deadline and meeting schedule for the new REB?
Submission deadlines will be the second Wednesday of every month, and the board will meet on the fourth Wednesday of every month. Go to Meetings & Deadlines.

3. Do I need to apply to both the UBC C&W REB and CREB or BREB?
No. You only have to apply to one research ethics board. The UBC C&W REB is affiliated with UBC and was established to meet the needs of researchers based on the Oak Street campus.

4. How do I submit an application to the UBC C&W REB?
Just like before – using RISe. The only difference is that in Section 4.1 you will select “Children’s and Women’s Research Ethics Board – Behavioural” or “Children’s and Women’s Research Ethics Board – Clinical.”

5. If I have any issues with RISe, who do I contact?
The RISe Helpdesk (604-875-RISE or 604-875-7473).

6. Are there fees for ethics applications?
Fees will continue to be charged for for-profit, industry sponsored studies but they will now be payable to the UBC C&W REB. Go to Fees.

7. Will I need to complete a Program Utilization Form when I submit a new application?
Yes. A hard-copy Program Utilization Form must be completed and submitted with your ethics application. The form cannot be submitted electronically or attached to your RISe application. The form is available within RISe.

8. I have more questions. Who do I ask?
Please contact Maryam Ghafouri (604-875-3103), Administrative Coordinator, UBC C&W REB.
