research using human participants.
- Includes all phases from development to post-marketing trials.
- Can be industry-sponsored or investigator-initiated.

Collaborative Research Agreements
Provide for the conduct of directed, collaborative, or joint research of mutual interest to the researcher and the company with shared rights and access to the results. There is an expectation that there may be new or incremental intellectual property developed within the project.

Grant in Aid Agreement
Essentially a donation to one or more researchers, normally to conduct research in an area that is of mutual interest to both the donor and the researcher(s). These grants are normally in the form of a one page letter addressed to a researcher and signed by the donor, and accompanied by the grant funds.

Material Transfer Agreement
Is required whenever material (any chemical compounds or any form of biological materials, such as cultures, cell lines, plasmids, nucleotides, proteins, transgenic animals or plants, or pharmaceuticals) is being transferred from a provider to a recipient.
