Overview
The Research & Technology Development Office (RTDO) provides expertise in strategic research planning, research design and grants crafting. Focusing on the quality of science and health research, the RTDO facilitators assist and advise investigators in the development and articulation of research ideas and funding applications, as well as in the processes of technology transfer and intellectual property protection.

The RTDO offers support in the following arenas

  • Research Development – mentorship, strategic initiatives, collaborations
  • Proposal Development – peer and critical review, competitiveness, opportunities, coordination
  • Technology Development – funding, IP, commercialization, partnerships
  • Strategic Planning – individuals, groups, programs, institute
  • Education – proposal development, critical review, scientific communication
The goal of the RTDO is to increase CFRI’s success rate for external research, infrastructure and salary awards that align with institutional priorities and strategic vision.

The RTDO was established at CFRI in August 2003 with funding from a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Institutional Infrastructure Award. The office has three research development facilitators, part-time proposal coordinators and grants assistants, and a hospital-affiliated technology transfer manager.

In the past 7 years, the RTDO facilitators have developed and supported more than 900 research proposals, helping to bring over $190 million to CFRI. Successes include >250 operating grants, >100 team and infrastructure proposals, and 67 salary awards. Major initiatives include CFI/BCKDF projects such as the Centre for Understanding & Preventing Infection in Children and the Child & Family Research Imaging Facility, and the NeuroDevNet Network of Centres of Excellence.

CFRI investigators were also assisted to file 121 patents, disclose 103 inventions, apply for 32 licenses and obtain technology development funds from CIHR, NIH and other sources.
